Nanomedicine

A Systems Engineering Approach

by Mingjun Zhang

Nanomedicine blends science and engineering towards biomedical applications that range from medical use of nanomaterials to nanoelectronic biosensors. This interdisciplinary book addresses two main challenges which nanomedicine currently faces: quantitative description of drug effects at nanoscale and precise control of the drug effects. It contains eight chapters written by experts working in the field. One can find in this volume introduction to nanomedicine, description of basic mathematical techniques exploited in modeling of nano biosystems, a mathematical formulation of the central dogma of molecular biology, as well as a number of case studies. Namely, contributions to this volume deal with a system approach to characterization of living (Drosophila) embryos, learning signal pathway structures, computational modeling of tumor biobarriers, multiscale-multiparadigm modeling, simulations of nanomedical applications and a game theoretical formulation of the immune system for controlled drug delivery. The book illustrates the important role played by systems engineering in the development of nanomedicine and will be useful for graduate students and researchers working in this field.
