Regenerative medicine and tissue engineering offer an alternative technique to whole-organ and tissue transplantation for diseased, failing, or malfunctioning organs. Millions of patients suffer from end-stage organ failure or tissue loss annually, and the only solution might be organ and biomaterial transplantation. However, to avoid the shortage of donor organs and poor biocompatibility–related problems, a new hybridized method combining cells and biomaterials was introduced around 20 years ago: regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. This handbook focuses on all aspects of “intelligent” scaffolds, from basic science to industry to clinical applications. The book is organized into 10 parts and covers research on stem cell engineering, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, 3D printing, drug delivery systems, nanomaterials and nanodevices, novel biomaterials, and natural biomaterials. It is illustrated throughout with excellent figures and references accompany each chapter. The book can be used by advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level students of stem cell engineering and tissue engineering and researchers in macromolecular science, ceramics, metals for biomaterials, nanotechnology, chemistry, biology, and medicine, especially those with an interest in tissue engineering, stem cell engineering, and regenerative medicine.
About the Editor:
Gilson Khang obtained his BS and MS degrees from Inha University, Korea, and his PhD (1995) from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Iowa, USA. In 1987, he joined Dr. Hai Bang Lee’s Biomaterials Lab at the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, where until 1998, he worked on the development of drug delivery systems, contact lenses, blood bags, blood-compatible vascular grafts, urinary catheters, and tissue-engineered cartilage, bone, and spinal cord.
Dr. Khang is a member of the Society for Biomaterials and the American Association of Pharmaceutical Science and was the one of the founder members of the Asian Tissue Engineering Society (ATES) and the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS)-AP chapter. From 2005 to 2009 he was general secretary and treasurer of the chapter and now serves as a council member. In 2015, he became TERMIS-AP continental chair and in 2016 the TERMIS Global president-elect and executive board member. In trying to expand the TERMIS-AP chapter to West/Middle-East Asia, he also established Iran TERMS and gulfTERMS.
