Luis Liz-Marzán, is Ikerbasque Professor and Scientific Director of the Center for Cooperative Research in Biomateriales, CIC biomaGUNE, in San Sebastián (Spain), since September 2012. He obtained a PhD in chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in 1992, was postdoc at Utrecht University (The Netherlands, 1993-1995) and Professor at the University of Vigo (Spain, 1995–2012). He has been Invited Professor at several universities and research centers worldwide and has received numerous research awards, most recently including the Blaise Pascal Medal of the European Academy of Sciences and the National Chemistry Award from the Ministry of Science in Spain. He is also a member of several Spanish and European Academies. Liz-Marzán has an extensive track record of over 450 published papers, with a very high citation rate (Highly Cited Researcher 2014-2019). He is also one of the few European researchers who was awarded with two consecutive ERC Advanced Grants. He supervised 30 PhD students to date and mentored over 50 postdocs. His major research activity is devoted to understand the growth mechanisms of metal nanocrystals, to tailor their surface chemistry and direct self-assembly. He also works on the design of biomedical applications based on the plasmonic properties of well-defined metal nanoparticles and nanostructures.
