Sergej Demokritov
After having started his scientific carrier at Kapitza Institute for Physical Problems in Moscow, Russia, Sergej O. Demokritov in 1993 moved to Germany, where he worked at the Research Centre Juelich and then at Technische Universität Kaiserslautern. In 2003, he established the group of Nonlinear Magnetic Dynamics at the Munster University, where he studied spin wave dynamics and quantum thermodynamics in magnetic nanostructures. He has experimentally found spin wave quantization due to lateral confinement, spin wave well effect and spin wave tunneling. In 2007, he was nominated for the Scientific American 50 award for his discovery of Bose-Einstein condensation of spin wave quanta (magnons) at room temperature.
